In 1921, director F.W. Murnau set out to make a horror film based on Bram Stoker's novel, `Dracula,' but was denied the rights to the property by Stoker's estate. Undeterred, however, Murnau merely changed the title to `Nosferatu,' the name of the title character to `Count Orlok,' then proceeded to make what has come to be considered nothing less than a classic of the silent film era.

An unsettling film (especially for the times in which it was made), it is a faithful adaptation of Stoker's story, and brings images to the screen, the likes of which at the time, had never before been seen.

This very special showing of Murnau's fillm has a disctinctly Celtic twist not only due to the David Allison's live music accompaniment, but also a Scottish voice leading us through the narrative.

Back in 1888 Emily Gerard, a travelwriter from Airdrie, was the first person to bring the word 'nosferatu' or 'undead' into western european awarenesswhen she wrote about Transylvanian superstitions in her essay The Land Beyond The Forest.

Bram Stoker read Emily Gerard's account and subsequently wrote Dracula. Using live music, samples, sound effects and 'the voice' of Emily Gerard as narrator (played by Anne Marie Watson), David Allison's version of Nosferatu is an entertaining, eerie and original take on one of cinema's true classics.

David Allison's recent performances of The St Kilda Tapes were complete sell-outs - if you don't book quickly you might miss your chance to experience this most haunting, chilling of cinematic gems.

This 2007 print of the film has been lovingly restored by the FW Murnau-Stiftung and Luciano Berriutua. A rare chance to see the film in all its glory.
